SIT-251 Comprehensive Cultural Tour
with Raptor Center
A Family Friendly
Tour
Explore
Sitka in our comfortable passenger coaches. Learn Sitka’s local
facts, Tlingít and Russian History & Culture. The tour will drive by
Sitka’s historic sites including Mt. Edgecumbe Volcano, the Alaska
Pioneer’s Home, St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral, and the
Russian Bishop’s house.
At Sitka National Historical Park, you
will be escorted through the lush rainforest along a scenic path where
totem poles depict the rich culture of the Tlingít people. The walk
includes topics such as edible and medicinal plants, the life cycle
and traditional uses of salmon species, and rainforest ecology. The
walk will lead into the Southeast Alaska Indian Cultural Center where
you will have the opportunity to visit with Tlingít Native Artisans
and view the park’s museum exhibits. The adjacent gift shop gives you
the opportunity to purchase various souvenirs and books on the park’s
totems and Tlingít history.
Sheldon Jackson Museum is Alaska’s first
museum and houses the largest collection of artifacts from the major
Native Alaskan groups. During your visit, you will walk through the
different sections of the gallery independently. View ancient
treasures, visit with a native artist while they demonstrate their
craft, and visit the museum gift shop. Museum staff are always nearby
to offer explanations and answer questions.
Experience an authentic Native dance
performance inside a traditional style clan house. The Naa Kahídi
Native Dance Performance begins with a story and a traditional burning
cedar fire tantalizing the senses. Dancers enter adorned in beautiful
regalia to captivate you with ancient songs passed down through
generations. The resonating box drum and a unique series of songs
enthrall all who attend, and impart a lasting impression of the
Tlingít people. You will have the opportunity to photograph and visit
with dancers immediately following the performance. While at the
Sheet’ka Kwaán Naa Kahídi, you can also visit the Made in Sitka Gift
Shop and Artist Co-op. This gift shop specializes in Native artwork
and unique items made exclusively in Sitka.
Complete the above, and then visit the
Alaska Raptor Center- a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the
public and providing medical treatment for birds of prey. Trained
facility staff will introduce you to a variety of natural exhibits,
including more than 20 living “Raptors-in-Residence” including bald and
golden eagles, hawks, falcons and owls. During your visit, you will have
the unparalleled opportunity to closely observe these majestic creatures.
